Just a quick question…

nekoconsulting:

If you say that Moffat’s sexist and you hate his writing…

then why do you watch Sherlock and Doctor Who?

Maybe this doesn’t apply to me because I certainly don’t hate Moffat’s writing and I don’t think he’s actively sexist. I do think he can be careless with his words in interviews, and that probably comes from a bit of overconfidence on his part, but again I don’t know the guy, so I shouldn’t be speculating.

BUT I do think I have an answer to your question (at least the Sherlock one, I don’t watch Dr. Who).

I love Sherlock. I love it. I think it’s clever and well-executed and beautiful and grand. That said, no show is perfect, no show is flawless, and yes I could probably point out a few things about Sherlock that are a bit sexist.

That doesn’t mean I have to stop watching or enjoying the show. It just means I am aware of the social context the show operates in. And being aware of this context allows me, as an active rather than passive viewer, to critique it along with the rest of the media I imbibe.

Because if we’re not critiquing the media, even the most intelligent and well-done media, then we become nothing more than empty buckets for it to fill with all kinds of crap. We need to have the filter of criticism so we know how to improve the standards of media.

Just my thoughts.
